System-on-Modules (SOMs) were developed to provide a convenient and cost-effective way for embedded system designers to leverage the latest advancements in technology without having to go through the complex and time-consuming process of developing custom systems. To simplify the life of designers, Variscite has released the VAR-SOM-AM62, a module for low-power embedded systems. The SoM is powered by the Texas Instruments AM62x, a low-cost MPU with scalable Arm Cortex-A53 performance and embedded features.

The VAR-SOM-AM62 runs on 1.4 GHz Quad-core Cortex-A53 with 400MHz Cortex-M4F and an additional 333 MHz PRU real-time co-processors. It offers camera interfaces MIPI-CSI2, integrated 3D GPU along with dual LVDS display. The VAR-SOM-AM62 is a low-cost device starting from only $33 making it suitable for low-cost embedded industrial products that require high performance and low power.

SOM integrates the core components of a computer system, including a microprocessor, memory, and input/output interfaces. It provides a convenient and cost-effective way for designers to build custom systems in a short period of time. SOMs are used in a variety of applications, such as industrial automation, medical devices, and embedded systems, where space and power limitations are a concern.

The SOM offers multiple connectivity features including a certified dual-band Wi-Fi, BT/BLE 5.2, 3x CAN bus, dual USB, and dual GbE. Moreover, it supports industrial operating temperatures. The SoM is a member of Variscite’s Pin2Pin product family, allowing developers to use the same carrier board design for a wide range of processors and the company also offers long product lifecycles.

“The integration of the AM625x processor into the VAR-SOM-AM62 gives developers a solid foundation that combines performance and power efficiencies,” said Ofer Austerlitz, VP Business Development and Sales of Variscite. “These qualities along with its integrated interfaces generate a very attractive cost-optimized solution for present-day embedded edge devices.”

The company has also launched a VAR-SOM-AM62 evaluation kit that serves as a complete development platform for both evaluation and application development purposes and includes the scalable Symphony carrier board and an optional LVDS display with a touch panel. The VAR-SOM-AM62 combines performance and efficiency and offers a great solution for low-powered embedded applications.
